Choosing GBP Categories: The Highest-Leverage 10 Minutes in Local SEO

June 29, 2026 · 2 min read · Mapseo Team

If you only fix one thing on a Google Business Profile this month, fix the categories. Study after study puts the primary category among the strongest local ranking factors — and it takes ten minutes.

Primary category: be what people search

Your primary category should match the highest-value thing customers search, not your legal description. A firm that does 80% roof repair should be "Roofing contractor", not "Construction company". Google maps queries to categories literally: pick the wrong one and you are simply not in the race.

Check what the top three ranking competitors use for your money keyword — tools and even manual inspection reveal it. If they all share a primary category and you do not, that is usually the gap.

Secondary categories: cover the services

Add every category you genuinely operate — "Emergency plumber", "Water heater installation" — up to nine secondaries. Each one makes you eligible for a wider query set. Two rules: never add a category for a service you do not offer (suspension risk and refund-demanding customers), and review the list quarterly because Google adds and renames categories constantly.

The silent killer: category changes

Here is what most owners never learn: categories can change without you touching them. Google accepts public "suggest an edit" submissions, applies machine-learned updates, and sometimes reverts your choices. A changed primary category can quietly drop you from the pack for weeks before anyone notices the phone stopped ringing.

That is why category monitoring matters as much as category choice. Every profile check we run compares the live category against your intended one and alerts you the hour it drifts — with one-click revert.

The ten-minute audit

  1. Search your money keyword; note the top 3 competitors' primary categories.
  2. Match or beat their specificity.
  3. Add every legitimate secondary.
  4. Diarize a quarterly re-check — or let the Watchdog do it hourly.
